Uranus Flagship: Investigations and Instruments for Cross-Discipline Science

Purpose and Scope

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together scientists and engineers to discuss how cross-discipline discoveries in the Uranus system can be achieved through instrument concepts and synergistic scientific investigations. This differs from past workshops that were focused on traditional, discipline-specific Ice Giant science questions. All components of the Uranus System (interior to magnetosphere) are in our scope, as are ties to exoplanets, heliophysics, and astrophysics. Innovative aspects of mission or instrument design that enable cross-discipline science are also welcome. This workshop will advance planning for the Uranus Orbiter and Probe mission called for by the recently released Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Survey.

Workshop Format

The 3-day workshop will include invited and contributed oral presentations, poster presentations, and panel discussions. Each session will allocate time for open discussion. We envision sessions in three categories:

• Cross-cutting science that addresses origins, evolution, and workings of the Uranian system
• Instrument concepts and potential requirements
• Mission design elements that enable synergistic science.

The number of sessions allocated to each category will depend on the abstracts received.

There will be panel discussions and Q&A after each of the oral sessions, and a panel on Integrating DEIA on a Uranus Flagship Mission. There will also be two afternoon poster sessions.

Contributed oral presentations may be given remotely. The interactive poster sessions, however, will be for in-person attendees only. PDF versions of all posters will be made available for remote participants to view.
