The Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC), jointly organized by the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) and NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC), brings together international specialists in petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, geology, and astronomy from around the world to present the latest results of research in planetary science. LPSC is the premier planetary science conference in the world. Since its beginning in 1970, when it was called the Apollo 11 Lunar Science Conference, the meeting has been a significant focal point for planetary science research, with nearly 1800 planetary scientists and students representing 41 countries attending the conference each year.

LPSC poster session

Today, LPSC features a broad range of planetary topics with more than 1300 poster presentations.

LPSC features four full days and one half day of oral and poster presentations organized by topical symposia and problem-oriented sessions based on submitted abstracts. LPSC receives over 2000 abstracts from around the world from Argentina and Ireland to Switzerland and Vatican City. Contributed abstracts are peer-reviewed, and selections for presentation are based on the overall relevance of the subject matter to the conference and the quality of the science. A number of Special Sessions and Highlighted Events are also scheduled throughout the week of the conference covering a variety of topics, including events in planetary science and current planetary missions and their results.

LPSC poster session

LPSC is unique because it draws a significant student population — over 30% of attendees are students — which provides opportunities for early career scientists to discuss research with senior colleagues.

Despite the growth of the conference over the years, LPSC remains a community-focused conference fostering a collegial environment in which the discussion of relevant scientific and technological issues aims to advance understanding of the solar system and promote scientific discovery.
