LEAG Service Award

The LEAG Service Award will be presented at the 2023 Annual Meeting. This award recognizes a lunar science and exploration community member who has exhibited exemplary service to the community. The selected individual will have demonstrated extensive service to LEAG and/or the lunar community through excellence in leadership, continuous dedication to mentoring and enriching the early-career community and will possess an extensive track record in the field of science and/or exploration of the Moon and/or innovation.

Nomination and Selection Process
For consideration this year, nominations must be received by August 7, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. CDT to allow time for the evaluation of the nominees and notification of the selected awardee. The selected awardee will be recognized at the annual LEAG meeting and invited to give a presentation on a topic of the awardee’s choosing on day 1 of the meeting. Nominations are restricted to 2,000 characters and should include specific information regarding the nominee’s criteria. Nominations should be submitted via email to the LEAG Chair, Amy L. Fagan ([email protected]).

Nominations for future LEAG service awards can be made throughout the year, and the LEAG Executive Committee will evaluate nominations and select the awardee. Nominees who are not selected will be considered for future awards without a need for resubmission.

Bernard Ray Hawke Next Lunar Generation Career Development Award LEAG 2023 Meeting: Early-Career Researcher and Student Participation Support

Larry Taylor Travel Fund
Sponsored by USRA/LPI

Prof. Lawrence (Larry) A. Taylor (1938–2017) of the University of Tennessee was a prolific scientist working on the Earth’s mantle, meteorites, and predominantly our Moon. With at least 540 peer-reviewed journal publications, Larry was a force to be reckoned with in his subject matter and also in life! He was passionate about finding the correct lunar simulants for engineering studies to get the United States back to the Moon, this time to stay. This work culminated with the award of the NASA SSERVI Wargo Award in 2017 for his contributions to planetary science and exploration. Larry was also passionate about training the next generation, and throughout his career, he mentored over 50 postdoctoral scholars, numerous graduate students, and taught many undergraduates. In his honor, the Larry Taylor Travel Fund has been established for students only (undergraduate and graduate) to continue inspiring the next generation.

A limited number of travel awards for undergraduate and graduate students are available.

Bernard Ray Hawke Career Development Award
Sponsored by SSERVI

Dr. B. Ray Hawke (1946–2015) of the University of Hawaii was a pillar of the lunar exploration community. Dr. Hawke did pioneering work integrating results from Apollo samples with remote sensing results and, more recently, was a valuable member of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter science team. As a peerless educator, Dr. Hawke taught and mentored students at the University of Hawaii and around the world. Dr. Hawke was a fearless advocate for lunar exploration and worked tirelessly to promote lunar industrial development and the establishment of a permanent lunar surface outpost.

The prestigious LEAG Bernard Ray Hawke Next Lunar Generation Career Development Award, sponsored by SSERVI, honors his legacy of scientific achievement, exploration advocacy, and mentorship by providing travel support for up to three outstanding early career researchers (those within five years of earning their PhD or highest terminal degree) to attend the annual LEAG meeting, and in so doing, help these early career researchers grow even more as productive members of the lunar exploration community.

To apply, please fill out the application form at the link below. Applicants are not required to submit an abstract to the meeting to be eligible for the award (but are encouraged to do so). Recipients will be notified approximately one month before the meeting.
