Field Trip

In coordination with the USGS and Barringer Crater Company, we are pleased to announce the resumption of a unique field trip to the Barringer Meteor Crater in conjunction with this meeting. This field trip includes a hike completely around the crater rim, which is normally not accessible to the public. The field trip is scheduled for August 12, 8:00 a.m.–11:00 a.m. We will meet at 7:00 a.m. and carpool to the crater.

Please be aware that this is an outdoor hike at an elevation of approximately 5,650 ft (1.72 km) above sea level. The hike is approximately 3 mi (5.2 km) long with 400 ft (120 m) total elevation gain along the rim. The weather tends to be 70–90 °F (20–30 °C) in the sunny, arid northern Arizona environment. Please be aware of your own personal ability and any potential health limitations. To participate, Barringer Crater Company will require that every person signs a liability waiver upon arrival.

We were able to extend the deadline for a final count for the field trip to this August 4, 2023. Please contact Stuart Robbins at [email protected] as soon as possible if you would like to attend and did not already get a logistics email from him on July 31, 2023.
