Biosignature Preservation and Detection in Mars Analog Environments

Field trip Information

An optional field trip is planned to look at the deposits associated with the Steamboat Springs hydrothermal system on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 18, immediately following the workshop. Our group will make several stops to examine the geology, including the main sinter terrace, which is on private property with restricted access. Because of constraints involving site access, including the fact that this is an actively operating geothermal power plant, participation will be limited to 45 people. Spots will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and you MUST sign up for the trip on the registration form. There will not be an additional fee for this trip.

Volunteer field trip drivers are needed. If you are willing to volunteer for that role, please let us know using the appropriate selection on the registration form. Once you have registered for the field trip, please contact Lindsay Hays and indicate what size vehicle you are planning to rent. It is preferred, but not required, that drivers rent larger vehicles.

Field Trip Logistics

We will depart from the conference venue at ~12:30 p.m. and have all field trip participants rendezvous in a parking lot at the Redfield campus of University of Nevada, Reno, which is immediately adjacent to the Steamboat Springs site. For those who need rides, we expect to have several vans making the trip from the conference venue to the Redfield campus. We will reconfigure into vans at that point for the purpose of visiting the field trip stops. The field trip will nominally end at ~5:30 p.m. (although there is one final “bonus” stop, for those who have the time/interest). We will return to our assembly point at Redfield, and from there, we will send at least one van to the airport to catch the evening flights, and another back to the conference hotel. We assume that many field trip participants will want to stay the night in a Reno hotel, so as to catch flights in the morning, and we will split up the transportation as needed.
