Education/Public Outreach Events
At this year’s LPSC, there will be a variety of events and opportunities that will be of interest to the E/PO community and scientists who are involved in — or are interested in — education and outreach.
Submit an E/PO Abstract —
We invite all those involved with education and public outreach to submit an abstract for the E/PO poster sessions. The abstract deadline is January 7, 2014; to submit, follow the abstract submission instructions, and choose the topic “Education and Public Outreach” on the abstract submission form.
NASA YSS Undergraduate Planetary Science Research Conference —
For the fourth consecutive year, the NASA-sponsored YSS Undergraduate Research Conference will be held in conjunction with LPSC. The conference will take place on Sunday, March 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Town Center Exhibit Hall at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center.
- Panels on "How to Choose the Grad School Right for You," "Alternative Careers in Science," and "Women in Planetary Science"
- Poster sessions where students will present their research to other students and to the scientific community
- Meeting Mentors," which will pair students with a scientist for part of the LPSC meeting, so students can learn how to engage at a scientific conference
- Opportunities to meet other undergraduate researchers, graduate students, and scientists
Undergraduate students currently conducting research in planetary sciences, astrobiology, and lunar sciences are eligible.
- Apply for the NASA YSS Undergraduate Research Conference by submitting the indication of interest form by close of business February 7, 2014. This form serves as the registration form for the conference. https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meeting_portal/iofi/index.cfm?mtg=yssurc2014 *
- Submit an abstract for the NASA YSS Undergraduate Research Conference by February 21, 2014. All NASA YSS Undergraduate Research Conference student participants, and all participants receiving travel support, are expected to submit an abstract and present a poster at the conference. https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meeting_portal/abstract_submission/?mtg=474 *

Some travel support will be available to students who qualify. Priority will be given to students of diverse backgrounds. To receive support, students must attend the entire NASA YSS Undergraduate Research Conference and present a poster. Students are encouraged to attend LPSC and any travel support can be applied to registration for and participation in LPSC.

Planetary Science Undergraduate Faculty Workshop —

Join us for this half-day workshop exploring a suite of teaching resources for the undergraduate classroom including EarthSpace (an online repository for higher education materials in earth and space science), strategies for using social media to connect and share with your community, and techniques for assessment that will support and help you share the story of your education efforts.

E/PO Community Professional Development Workshop: Working with Diverse Audiences —
Sunday, March 16, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Indian Springs Room, The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center
This session will feature suggestions and lessons learned for addressing needs of diverse audiences, with a focus on rural and Hispanic/Latino audiences. NASA E/PO community and external experts will share their stories and suggestions from the field. Existing resources will be highlighted, including new diversity resources on the Science Mission Directorate E/PO Community Workspace.
